When it rains, it pours; or at least the rain pours out of your down spouts. A simple rain barrel can collect and save that rainwater and help your plants grow like spring all summer long.

Collecting rain water with a rain barrel not only reduces your water bill, the rain water you collect has nitrogen in it. That's one of the reasons plants grow so well in the spring when rain is plentiful. Collecting rain water and storing it a rain barrel provides the perfect water for watering the garden and potted plants during those dry spells in summer.

You can make a rain barrel with nothing but a simple container that will hold water. For this project, I used a 14 gallon storage container. You'll need to drill several holes on one end of the lid as pictured for the water to enter the container. It's important to keep a lid on it so small animals like squirrels or birds don't get in and drown.

You can add a hose connection and shutoff valve using the hardware listed below.
  • Brass adapter with 3/4" MH (Male Hose Threads) & 1/2" MIP (Male Pipe Threads).

  • Rubber washer that fits over the 3/4" end of the brass adapter.

  • Stainless steel or galvanized washer that fits over the 3/4" end of the brass adapter.

  • A nut with 1/2" FIP (Female Pipe Threads).

  • Shutoff valve that attaches to a water hose.

  • A female hose fitting to attach a drip hose.

  • A hose connector filtering screen.
See the next page for instructions for assembling your rain barrel spigot..
